Thermal Metrology Division

In support to the performance of its institutional mission, it is up to the Thermal Metrology Division to realize
and maintain the units of the International System of Units (SI) ,
pertinent to thermo physics, disseminating them to the different sectors that demand metrological services, assuring to society a metrological reliability in the basic services of quality and of the infrastructure of competitiveness.

The development of R&D activities in metrology and participation in programs of laboratorial comparison are other activities performed by the Division.

The Division maintains a well equipped laboratory with an area of 600 square meters , an anti-vibration suspension isolated room and free of mechanical and electromagnetic interference, endowed with climatization
and physical installations in line with what is demanded by the international rules.

The Division maintains a Quality System that is kept updated. The Division comprises the following reference metrological
laboratories:

Pyrometric Laboratory; Thermometric laboratory; hygrometric laboratory; cryogenic laboratory (an upcoming project) and Characterization laboratory of Thermo physics proprieties (a future project).

Philosophy of Performance

IIn line with their decentralization and strengthening of laboratorial networks of metrological services carried out around the country, the Division´s laboratories concentrate and give priority to its role in the performance of its functions at Inmetro´s metrological laboratories, whose major task is to take care of the Brazilian metrological standards; take part in programs of laboratorial comparisons and to promote the maintenance of the SI units, as well as its dissemination among accredited laboratories. In line with the purposes of a National Metrology Laboratory the Division seeks to practice the highest levels of accuracy and the lowest uncertainties associated with the measuring process.

Main Services Offered

The Thermal Division offers calibration of specific instruments and of standards of temperature and humidity demanded by the laboratories accredited by Inmetro in the Brazilian Network of Calibration and the Brazilian Network of Test Laboratories, as well as by laboratories linked to the Brazilian Network of Legal Metrology and quality, industries, universities and research centers. Among the innumerous measuring ranges, types of instruments and associated
uncertainties Platinum Resistance thermometers and Thermocouple Thermometers are calibrated by the following standard procedures and fixed points; liquid in glass lthermometers, resistance thermometers, pyrometers of visible radiation and infra-red and pyrometric lamps are calibrated by comparison.

Other Services Offered

Development of metrological programs of comparison of standards, project and qualification of measuring
instruments, development of techniques and procedures of tests and calibration; elaboration of technical regulations; installation of quality systems; training in thermal metrology etc.

Reference Standards

In the domain of Thermal Metrology, the Division is responsible for the custody and maintenance of Brazil´s metrological standards, which are systematically traced and compared to the international standards though Key Comparisons
under the supervision of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures and to standards of metrological laboratories of other nations´ Metrological Institutes. For maintaining fixed point cells always compared to those of other nations´ laboratories with tradition in metrology, the Division promotes the realization of the International Temperature Scale (ITS 90)
Scale, following international criteria. Among the available standards, we could name the 25 W and 2,5 W platinum resistance thermometers, the platinum/platinum-rhodium Thermocouple Thermometers, the photoelectric
pyrometer and highly stable tungsten lamps.

Main Projects under development

In partnership with metrological institutions from both Brazil and abroad, the Division coordinates the following basic projects in the field of metrology: construction and calibration of Thermocouples up to 1500ºC - the PADCT III project.
